The SEER Rating And The Energy Star Label: Look For Them When You’re Buying Your New A/C
In Florida, our A/C systems work overtime a large part of the year. Eventually, even the most reliable air conditioner needs to be replaced. If you’re in that situation, or you think you will be in the near future, you’ll need to keep some factors in mind as you look for a new system.
- Insulation: Have you improved it since buying your last system? If you have, you might be able to buy a smaller system.
- Your duct system. Sealing your ductwork before you make your purchase might also allow you to buy a smaller system. That smaller system, plus the reduced air leakage from your ductwork will mean smaller utility bills.
- The SEER rating of your new system.
- The Energy Star. Make sure your system has that label.
Naturally, the efficiency of your new A/C is of prime concern, particularly with energy costs the way they are these days. Getting new equipment with a high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating means it will be more efficient and less expensive to operate.
Older air conditioners usually have a 5 or 6 rating, while newer models have a rating of 10 or more. Today, all new residential units must have a SEER rating of at least 13. Units that have the Energy Star label must have a rating of at least 14.
The Energy Star designation means that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has rated it most efficient. When you buy any appliances or equipment for your home, always look for the Energy Star designation.
