Seal The Leaks In Your Ductwork, And You Can Plug A Drain On Your Pocketbook

Cool, clean, well-circulated air is a basic need in Florida. Surviving a typically oppressive summer here without it would be unimaginable.

But if your home is like most others, it loses about 20 percent of the conditioned air that passes through the ducts to the various rooms in your home. This precious air leaks through holes, cracks and poorly sealed connections.

This is one reason that some of your rooms may seem warm and stuffy, while others are cool and comfy during the dog days. Another tell-tale sign is high utility bills.

In addition to reducing your energy bills, sealing the ducts in your home can:

  • Help regulate the temperatures in each room.
  • Improve indoor-air quality, reduce the risk of pollutants entering the ducts and alleviate allergies.
  • Lower the amount of fossil fuels that create pollution and lead to global warming.
  • Prevent toxic gasses (such as carbon monoxide), which are produced by gas appliances, from getting sucked back into your home rather than expelled outside through the ventilation system.

To improve duct performance in your home, start by sealing air leaks using metal tape or mastic sealant (not duct tape) on the ducts you have access to. Make sure the connections are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls, and ceiling. Working with a professional contractor can help to ensure that the job is done right.

Energy Star has an online brochure that offers more information about duct sealing. You can also contact us at Symbiont Service with any questions about sealing your ducts. We’re happy to help you find the most cost-effective, energy-efficient solutions for your home.
