Essentials Of Maintaining Your Solar System
Acquiring a solar energy system for your home will save you money on utility bills and and help Florida’s environment at the same time.
Your system will operate most efficiently if you take the time to maintain it with regular checks:
Solar collectors: Solar collectors are the panels that collect the energy from the sun to be stored and used in your heating system. If the sun isn’t directly shining on these panels all day, you won’t be able to generate enough energy. Be sure there aren’t any trees, bushes or buildings blocking the panels. Check during different times of the day to be sure no shadows hit them. In addition, you will want to be sure they are clean and free of dust. Call a technician if you see any cracks.
Storage tanks: Storage tanks hold the hot water generated by your solar panels. Check around them to see if there are any leaks or rust.
Blowers or pumps: Blowers or pumps distribute the heated air or water. If you don’t hear them working when the sun is shining, you need to call a technician.
Some parts of your system need expert attention. Be sure to call in a qualified service technician to look at:
Sun and rain damage: Nuts and bolts can become loose or rusted. Roof flashing and sealant can become damaged. Insulation can degrade. The collectors can become cracked, yellowed or damaged. All can be repaired or replaced by a technician.
Fluids and valves: Antifreeze in the system need to be changed periodically. In addition, any valves and dampers on your system need to be checked to ensure they move properly.
The strong sun of Florida makes solar systems effective, but it can also affect their lifespan. Some aspects of your system can’t be maintained by you, so be sure to call in a qualified technician periodically to check them.
