Comparing Potential Heat Pump Upgrades? Consider The Lifetime Costs
A heat pump is an efficient and effective means of heating and cooling a home in our temperate Florida climate. But as with other HVAC systems, heat pumps have a limited lifespan — usually no more than 20 years for most models. Depending on the age of your heat pump, chances are you have thought about a replacement or even a heat pump upgrade.
If so, keep in mind that there is more to consider than just the sticker price. While you may pay more for a heat pump upgrade at the outset, you’ll find that the added energy efficiency and money-saving features like those listed below can more than make up the difference.
Higher SEER ratings — A heat pump’s SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, is a comparison of how much cooling it provides versus how much energy it consumes. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the heat pump. At the low end of the spectrum are heat pumps with a SEER rating of 13 — the lowest allowable by law. High-end heat pumps can reach a SEER rating of 18. While you will pay more for premium models at the time of purchase, you’ll enjoy significant energy savings over the unit’s lifetime.
Energy Star-qualified –Lower-end heat pumps are not usually Energy Star-certified appliances because they don’t meet the strict product guidelines put forth by the EPA. When you purchase an Energy Star-qualified heat pump, you know that you’ll be able to recover the additional investment with energy savings over time.
Variable speed — While their traditional counterparts run at a constant rate and cycle on and off throughout the day, the variable speed blowers available on premium heat pumps run continuously but at different speeds. With a constant circulation of air, these systems are quieter, more efficient and better able to handle humidity.
