Program Your Thermostat For Efficiency And Savings Using This Guide

Program Your Thermostat For Efficiency And Savings Using This GuideWhether you’re heating or cooling a home, a programmable thermostat is a great way to reduce energy costs.  Rather than having your HVAC system operate at full capacity when you’re at work or asleep, you can program your thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature according to a set schedule that matches your lifestyle. It’s an ideal set-up that allows you to maximize comfort while minimizing energy cost.

There are a few important guidelines to follow when you program your thermostat.

  • Proper installation: Even the best programmable thermostat won’t be able to do its job if it wasn’t properly installed from the beginning. Ask your HVAC technician to check it as part of your annual maintenance visit.
  • Eight-hour minimum: To get the most energy savings out of your thermostat, make sure that you schedule your “away” periods for no less than eight hours. In other words, don’t change the temperature too frequently. It just makes the system work harder.
  • Each degree counts: Even programming a small temperature change can result in energy savings for you, but you’ll see a bigger difference in your bill if you really push it. During the heating season, program your thermostat for a nighttime temperature that’s eight degrees lower than your daytime setting. Over time, your savings will really add up.
  • Program each zone: If your home has multiple heating or cooling zones, don’t forget to program each one separately. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on energy savings opportunities.
  • Change the battery regularly: Some programmable thermostats run off a battery. If you have this type of thermostat in your home, plan to change the battery once a year to keep it operational.
