Lower Your Cooling Load Now, Before Florida Really Heats Up

In Florida, you know that the winters are warm and the summer is hot. Air conditioning costs can go through the roof during the lengthy cooling season, and you can spend a fortune to simply keep your home comfortable. Before the worst of the heat arrives and you crank up the A/C, consider the following steps for reducing your cooling load:

Why Lower Your Cooling Load?

Your cooling load is the amount of energy your A/C expends to cool your house to a comfortable temperature. The warmer it is and the harder your A/C has to work, the more energy it’s going to take to cool your house down. This not only costs you money in energy bills but it also makes your A/C or heat pump work harder, meaning it will need more frequent maintenance and will have a shorter life-span.

How to Lower Your Cooling Load
By taking some steps to make it easier to cool your house, you can significantly reduce the load and help your cooling equipment do its job efficiently. To help lower your home’s cooling load:

  • Consider planting shade trees around your home. As much as half of the heat gain in your home, or more, during the summer will come from solar energy. By shading your home and minimizing the amount of sunlight your roof and windows get, you can cut down on the heat coming in.
  • Use window shades to keep sunlight from streaming through the windows and warming your space.
  • Refrain from running appliances that produce a lot of heat on warm days, such as the oven and clothing dryer.
  • Seal up gaps, cracks and leaks. When you have a leaky home, warm air comes in and cold air goes out, making your A/C work much harder
  • Consider replacing the windows. Using more energy-efficient windows can save between 25 and 50 percent on your cooling bill.
