Program Your Themostat For Optimal Savings

Program Your Themostat For Optimal SavingsAdjust your heating and air conditioning temperature to suit the times you’re at home and awake as well as the times you’re gone or asleep, and you’ll be more comfortable while saving on utility bills. You can do it by making multiple daily trips to the thermostat, or simply by installing a programmable thermostat to do it for you.

Programmable thermostats allow you to store programmed temperatures for four separate daily time spans. Usually these are morning, day, evening and night. The thermostat will turn the heating or cooling unit on 30 to 60 minutes in advance so the house temperature is already at the desired temperature when the programmed time span begins. You’ll want to program your thermostat for greater heater or cooling during the most occupied and active hours in your home and less when you’re asleep or not at home. An override setting is also available to take the thermostat off its programmed schedule and allow manual operation as desired. Avoid utilizing the override feature, however, since it nullifies the potential savings of a programmable model.

To fit the homeowner’s weekly at-work/at-home routines, many programmable thermostats provide programming for a continuous five-day stretch, like Monday through Friday, then a separate two-day programming period for weekends. Other programmable thermostats allow you to program your thermostat for all seven days of the week individually, providing the most flexibility when a number of family members are coming and going. Most programmable models have vacation features, which allow you to program your thermostat for these periods when your home will be unoccupied for several days at a time.

Most programmable thermostats marketed today have digital displays and touchpad inputs.  Typically, they include battery backup to preserve settings in the event of a power failure.
