Energy-Efficient Pool Heating

If you don’t want another winter to go by without being able to swim in comfortably warm water, consider pool heating with a heat pump. These are the most energy efficient ways to keep your pool warm during the cooler seasons of fall, winter and spring. Swimming year-round provides exercise, recreation and relaxation, and pool heating makes it possible, even on the coldest winter days.

One of the most efficient, long term, ways to heat a pool is a heat pump. These appliances move heat from one place to another and during the cool season in Florida, there’s almost always enough heat in the air to warm a swimming pool. Pool heat pumps can use air as a heat source or use the stable underground temperatures for heat extraction, as geothermal heat pumps do. Of the two, a geothermal system is the most energy efficient, since the temperatures below ground are stable no matter what the outdoor temperature is. A geothermal pool heater has higher installation costs, however, because the coils for the system lie four to six feet underground or even deeper.

Choosing and installing a pool heater typically involves an HVAC technician who can help you size the system for your swimming pool. The formula takes into account the surface area of your pool, average daytime highs during January, the nighttime lows, wind exposure and humidity levels. The size is also driven by how warm you want the water. Unlike heat pumps for homes that go by tonnage, pool heaters are classified by their horsepower and BTU output.
