Geothermal Pool Heating 101: Learn How It Works And Benefits Users — Across The Board

While the water temperature in your pool varies with the seasons, the temperature of water in lakes and aquifer wells in coastal Florida remains very consistent. Geothermal pool heaters utilize a water-source heat pump to take advantage of that free, steady underwater temperature and heat your pool all year long.

Geothermal systems extract water from a nearby source, such as a lake or well. The water is pumped to the above-ground unit, where it exchanges latent heat in the water with a coil of refrigerant, which utilizes a compression cycle multiply the heat. The hot refrigerant passes through a heat exchanger that transfers the heat to the pool water supply. The source water is returned to the lake or well. Pool water never directly contacts the source water.

Here are a few advantages of heating your pool with geothermal:

  • Well-engineered geothermal pool heating can maintain year-round temperatures of 85 degrees in a pool, and 104 degrees in a spa.
  • The only electricity consumed in a geothermal pool heating system is used by the compressor and water pumps. In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that geothermal reduces energy consumption in a range of 25 to 75 percent over conventional pool heating systems. A geothermal pool heater can pay for itself with the substantial savings in annual pool heating costs over a gas-fired heater.
  • Because of few moving parts and the substantial durability of components, a water-source geothermal heater has an expected service life of 20 years. This is the longest of all available heating sources.
  • Geothermal pool heating is a much more environmentally-friendly alternative to gas heaters. Utilizing the principles of heat transfer instead of heat generation, geothermal produces no emissions and generates a relatively small carbon footprint.
