Geothermal Systems: Frequently Asked Questions

Geothermal Systems: Frequently Asked QuestionsGeothermal systems have been getting more and more attention in recent years as a boon for the environment, as well as providing a cost-effective way of heating and cooling your home. But many homeowners have questions about the technology that powers these systems, so if you are interested in geothermal heating and cooling, you should take the time to educate yourself.

Here are the answers to four common questions about geothermal systems:

  • What is geothermal energy? Geothermal energy is a latent, renewable source of heat energy that originates underground. It tends to remain in the range of 45 to 70 degrees all year long, regardless of surface temperature or weather conditions.
  • How do geothermal heating and cooling systems work? Underground pumping and refrigerant equipment is installed below your home and connected to the interior of your house via a network of ducts. The refrigerant and pumps remove heat from your indoor air in the summer and expel it underground, while extracting heat from below the surface of the earth during the winter and pumping it into your home to increase the indoor temperature.
  • What are the advantages of geothermal systems? Geothermal systems are relatively low maintenance and produce very little pollution. They also dramatically reduce your home heating and cooling costs.
  • What are the drawbacks? These systems require a significant upfront investment.

It is also necessary for an expert to evaluate your home’s suitability for a geothermal conversion.
