Need A Geothermal Installer? Look To A Local Innovator: Symbiont
As any geothermal installer can tell you, geothermal systems are the fastest growing alternative energy source to heat houses, household water and swimming pools and spas. It’s clean, environmentally sustainable and offers efficiencies of over 400 percent, depending upon the locale. No wonder so many are jumping on the geothermal bandwagon. However, it hasn’t always been so.
In the early 1980s, only one had the foresight to see the potential of harnessing the year-round heat in the earth’s groundwater to heat pools efficiently. Symbiont Service Corporation was a Englewood-based residential heating and air conditioning contractor. Every year, Symbiont’s founder, Roy King, grappled with how to keep his air conditioning technicians on the payroll during the winter when the A/C business was slow. He knew his fellow Floridians were spending more to heat their swimming pools than residents in California and Hawaii. After disappointing results experimenting with solar pool heaters, King tested some of the existing air-source heat pumps. None provided sufficient heat to keep the thousands of gallons of water in a pool at an adequate temperature in winter.
King then began thinking about the consistent temperature of South Florida ground water and its latent energy potential. This boundless, free energy source seemed like a natural for a water-source geothermal pool heating application. One problem: There was no such thing as a geothermal pool heater, that he knew of. Roy King turned the problem into an opportunity and began designing his own system.
By 1983, he was ready to install the first operational geothermal pool heater called the Symbiont. Just as King had theorized, the system kept pools warm even in the coldest weather for a fraction of the cost of a gas-fired pool heater. Symbiont’s workforce soon had year-round employment installing new units and their customers had year-round enjoyment of their pools and spas with energy-efficient, money-saving, environmentally sustainable geothermal technology.
