How A Geothermal Aquifer Well Heats Your Pool
A geothermal aquifer well is an underground water source that supplies two natural resources: water and latent heat energy. In South Florida, the underground aquifers remain a constant 75 degrees year round. This consistent geothermal heat can be utilized by a water-source heat pump to heat swimming pool and spa water more economically than a gas-fired system. Typically, a geothermal swimming pool heater operates at 70 percent to 90 percent less expense than a gas heater. It produces heat entirely without combustion and its negative environmental side effects.
Here’s a basic view of how the geothermal aquifer well system works:
- Water at approximately 75 degrees is drawn from a well drilled into the existing underground aquifer. The water is pumped across an evaporator coil containing refrigerant that extracts the heat from the water. The refrigerant then passes through a compressor process where the molecules of heat energy are concentrated and the temperature increases substantially.
- The hot refrigerant is conveyed through a heat exchanger inside the pool heater that transfers heat from the refrigerant to the swimming pool water circulating through the heater. The well water and the pool water are never in contact and never mix. Hot pool water is returned to the pool if the thermostat calls for heat.
- After the heat is extracted from the well water, it’s pumped into a discharge well where it returns to the underground aquifer to sustain healthy groundwater levels.
