Tips To Improve Indoor Air Quality

Air conditioning is great — if you’re trying to keep cool in the summer. Your furnace is ideal for keeping your family warm in the winter. If you’re spending a lot of time indoors with the windows and doors closed we have tips to improve indoor air quality. Breathing fresh clean air is, naturally crucial to good health. If you’re a homeowner with pets in the home, you are also adding an additional layer of potential contaminants you’re breathing in while you’re indoors.

Tips To Improve Indoor Air Quality

Did you know that UV (ultra violet) lights can play a role in cleaning indoor air pollutants? It’s true. UV lighting aids in the defense of poor indoor air quality and inherent problems caused by ongoing exposure to impurities in your home. Items that add to poor indoor air quality include:

  1. Dust mites
  2. Pet dander
  3. Secondhand smoke
  4. Bacteria
  5. Gases like carbon monoxide or radon (make certain you have your home tested for radon and install a carbon monoxide detector)

breathe cleaner air use uv lightingAny, or all, of these contaminants can cause health problems including asthma-type symptoms, trouble breathing and others.

If you install UV lighting you can safely eliminate some of these contaminants.

UV lighting will not immediately banish all of the indoor pollutants, but they are effective in eliminating organic pollutants, especially bacteria, dust mites and air borne viruses. The light that emanates from an ultraviolet bulb kills germs. This is not a new technology or use for UV lighting — hospitals, dental clinics and veterinarian offices utilize ultraviolet lighting to clean the air and to help disinfect surfaces and medical instruments.

This technology is moving out of the medical setting and into the home to help improve air quality without introducing other chemicals or cleaning agents into the mix.

How to best use UV lighting to “cleanse” your home

The best usage for UV lighting in yor home is to utilize it with other indoor air quality methods. These could include:

  1. Using floor fans
  2. Using ceiling fancs to circulate the air
  3. Open the windows to circulte the air and to introduce fresh air into the home
  4. Supplement the use of fans, open windows and UV lighting by using HEPA-certified filters
  5. Use an air purifier
  6. Vacuum carpets and furniture at least once a week
  7. Don’t smoke indoors

Be aware that UV lighting can only kill living, organic matter and does little to no good on inorganic pollutants in your home.
