Should You Get A Programmable Thermostat?

Should You Get A Programmable Thermostat

Chances are you have heard about the advances in technology and have wondered should you get a programmable thermostat, we believe they are a great investment for homeowners in Florida. We have found that many homeowners that we work with are making a change to programmable thermostats and other high-tech home appliances and equipment.

A programmable thermostat works day and night, winter and summer and helps homeowners reduce their utility bills. How? Because many of us forget to turn the thermostat down when we leave the house or when we go to bed. A programmable thermostat relieves that burden of having to remember because it will turn down or up based on the times you have set. There are even “smart thermostats” on the market that will “learn” your habits and will turn up or down based on your lifestyle.

Should You Get A Programmable Thermostat?

Here are items to consider if you’re thinking of an upgrade to a programmable thermostat:programmable thermostat

  1. As mentioned newer programmable thermostats are sophisticated and will link to your smart phone. The thermostat will let you know how long it takes to reach the comfort level you’ve set for heating or cooling. After you’ve set the thermostat it will adjust based on your habits.
  2. Newer thermostats are digital. It may be an odd feeling when your thermostat will “determine” that your room or home is too hot or cold and will adjust accordingly back to the temperature you had preset.
  3. Digital thermostats will also update you — in the smart phone app — as to when the heater or air conditioner was on and for how long.

How can you save energy and save money with a programmable thermostat?

If you’re not home during the day the programmable thermostats should be adjusted to reflect the fact that there is no need to heat or cool the home while you’re gone. If you reduce the setting on your thermostat by 10° to 15° for eight to ten hours per day (while you’re at work or school) you could potentially save up to 15% on your utility bill annually. The best part is that no one will be complaining they are too hot or too cold because no one is home!

When investing in a programmable thermostat do some research to determine what features you want in the system. You may just want one that is purely programmable, you may want one that sends you alerts, some of them will also tell you when to change the filters in the furnace or air conditioner. If you want your heating and air conditioning unit to operate at peak efficiency — and who doesn’t? — changing filters is a necessary task.

If you invest in a programmable thermostat you may spend upwards of $100 or more depending on the features you want, but you will see a return on your investment in the savings you reap on your utility bills.

Cooling Your Pool

Woman In Pool
Cooling Your Pool

It’s summer here in Florida. Temperatures are firmly set among the 90’s and as all Floridians know, the heat is nearly inescapable.

Florida swimming pool owners understand that sometimes having a swimming pool that is too “hot” to swim in is an issue. Concern regarding a pool circles around heating. Although at Symbiont Service Corp heating a pool is second nature with our Symbiont GeoThermal Pool Heater, we know that keeping a pool from getting too hot is just as important. No one wants to swim in bath water in the heat of a Florida summer day!

Luckily, the same exact GeoThermal system that heats your pool can function as a cooling device as well. Furthermore, this is all done without any extra, intervening mechanism to complicate the seamless and straightforward approach to GeoThermal energy. Cooling your pool is possible with the installation of a GeoThermal system.

In the winter, Symbiont units transfer heat from a natural water source such as an aquifer well or a lake and transfers it to your pool. This is all done without any commingling of the water, and in an entirely environmentally friendly way. In the summer, Symbiont units are equipped to reverse the cycle and transfer the heat from the pool to the natural water source.

Cooling your pool

Typically the temperature of a swimming pool in Florida during the summer months will be in the 90’s. So enjoy your summer and jump into a refreshingly cooled pool using the environmentally friendly method of GeoThermal energy and the Symbiont. Get the temperature you want when you want it!

Disney and Symbiont: Together

Disney Nature Conservacy

GeoThermal Heating and Cooling have reached the Everglades – in the Disney Wilderness Preserve.

To protect and conserve Florida, The Walt Disney Company purchased land at the head of the Greater Everglades watershed in Kissimmee that was at risk for commercial development. Aside from maintaining the natural ecosystems within the Everglades area, Disney conservation efforts included the use of “Green” technology throughout the land and its properties.

In Spring 2015, the preserve’s Conservation Learning Center building was retrofitted to include GeoThermal Heating and Cooling. The learning center’s heat pumps were replaced with Bosch Thermotechnology Units – installed by Symbiont.
The GeoThermal technology of the Bosch units does not change the chemical composition of the land, sustaining the environmental integrity of the Everglades. Symbiont and Bosch’s collaborative “Green” efforts provide Disney’s Wilderness Preservation Center visitors and staff with comfort, while boasting affordability and energy savings.

The Disney Wilderness Preservation is yet another environmentally sound project that Symbiont Service is proudly involved in.

Symbiont would like to thank Retrofit – a publication and website that specializes in featuring retrofitting projects, for the feature.

Pool Water Too Warm In The Summer?

It’s summer, but people aren’t flocking to the pool, as you would expect in Florida. If you want answers, first ask yourself – is my pool too warm?

Pools need temperature regulation, even in the hot Florida summers.
Remember, while 75 ̊ F air feels comfortable, 75 ̊ F water feels cold.

GeoThermal heat pumps use a water-to-water transfer cycle to cool pools, and water transfers are proven to cool more effectively than air. Lake temperatures are more consistent than air temperature, while wells have a constant temperature. Fortunately, water sources are abundant and widely available in Florida.

In a GeoThermal system, in the cooling mode, the pool water passes through an evaporator coil where the heat is removed by the refrigerant. The heated refrigerant is then carried to the source water condenser coil where the heat is transferred to the source water.

GeoThermal heat pumps “transfer heat” as opposed to the “heat generation” of traditional heating and cooling methods. GeoThermal boasts energy efficient operation, while also outperforming traditional heating and cooling methods.

With GeoThermal, you will feel good about cooling your pool for the summer months.
